The Foundation for Theosophical Studies

The Foundation is an educational charity founded by the Theosophical Society in England.  The Foundation is committed to an open-minded advancement of human knowledge, to which purpose we hold lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences in central London and around the country, with some residential weekends and an Annual Summer School.

The Objects of the Foundation are:

To advance education, promote or further study and research into religion, philosophy and science, and to disseminate the results of such study and research to the public.

Also to promote study and research in the field of the laws of nature and the powers latent in man, and to advance the recognition of the fundamental unity of all people, through a knowledge of theosophical principles of unity and evolution and perfectability.

What is Theosophy?

The word Theosophy has been used for many centuries, its origins are from the Greek meaning Wisdom of the Gods (theo - of Gods, sophia – wisdom).  Theosophy is not a religion, however it does explore spiritual ideas and the nature of life and the universe, including those from philosophy, religion and science.  A study of theosophy throws light on all these areas of knowledge - it is an Ageless Wisdom.

Theosophy stands for the principles of existence and affirms:

  • All Life is One
  • Universal Law Pervades All
  • An Evolutionary Process in all life

In the sphere of human life these principles are expressed as:

  • The Brotherhood of all mankind
  • Unfoldment through reincarnation
  • Human Self-Realisation and transcendence

What is the Theosophical Society?

The Theosophical Society was founded in 1875 and promotes an understanding of the spiritual truths which lie behind all religions.  At its foundation is an aspiration for universal brotherhood, promoting mutual understanding and respect between all peoples – of all faiths or of none, drawing together those of goodwill whatever their nationality or opinions.  It is a worldwide organisation with its International Headquarters at Adyar, Chennai, India; and has 48 National Sections with local branches.

The Society has no obligatory set of beliefs and does not impose any dogma.  Its members accept the three Objects of the Society which are:   1. To form a nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.  2. To encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy and science.  3. To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in man.

The motto of the Theosophical Society is “There is no Religion Higher than Truth”.  .
